Gibson Road Antique Fire Association

The Gibson Road Antique Fire Association began in 1992, the product of two years of dreams and ideas. The name Gibson Road comes from the street which G.R.A.F.A.'s first president lives on. This Bucks County, Pa., street itself is named after Thomas Gibson, Jr., a young volunteer firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty in 1985. It is appropriate that an antique fire apparatus club select Gibson Road as its moniker. Initially we began with 17 apparatus owners. At present membership stands at 140, including individuals, families, and fire companies. Our emergency vehicles span two centuries from an 1834 hose cart to a 1976 Cadillac Ambulance. With 90 pieces of antique and classic fire apparatus this makes us one of the largest organizations of its kind in the United States. G.R.A.F.A. is the Southeastern Pa., chapter of The Society for the Preservation & Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America (SPAAMFAA). We hold monthly meetings, and produce a quarterly newsletter. Our annual events include a family picnic, muster and Christmas party, and parades, among other activities within the community. In an age when the fire departments can barely afford to maintain front line apparatus, its cherished "old-timers" must be sold. It is organizations like SPAAMFAA, with members like Gibson Road Antique Fire Association, that preserves and restores these beautiful pieces of America and their rich life-saving history of service.
